Are you looking to hire? Have you scoped out any Class of 2023 college grads? Not all experience needs to be professional to make a strong worker. Here's why you should be hiring Class of 2023 graduates, written by a 2023 graduate.
The majority of the Class of 2023 started college in 2019. Whether we commuted from home or moved across the country, we had a huge adjustment, as do most college freshmen. However, what makes us different is the fact that after being introduced to our new life after high school, we were immediately sent back home because of the nationwide lockdown. Now I know that the whole world was on lockdown and it was a huge adjustment for everyone, but let me tell you why it was specifically hard for us as freshmen. We had just started breaking out of our shells and adjusting to college and just life in general, and then everything was reversed. Suddenly we were all back in our high school friend groups (many of us hadn’t had the chance to make many friends in college yet), we were no longer learning how to be independent of our parents, and we were stripped of so many of the important events during our first 2 years of college. My point is, the Class of 2023 has been through it and yet, so many of us managed to graduate on time and gain experience during a time where nobody was hiring. You want employees who are resilient and adaptable, and if this doesn’t prove that the Class of 2023 has these qualities, I don’t know what does.
We are fresh out of college. Our minds are still in learning mode. We also have all of the knowledge we learned in the past 4 years through coursework and experience fresh in our minds. We bring a new perspective to the table. What we learned in the past 4 years is definitely not the same curriculum that was taught 10-15 years ago. There have been so many updates in various areas, and we have the knowledge of it.
Lastly, we are eager to work. For our entire lives, we have had the schedule of going to school 5 days a week and relaxing for 2. For the first time, we have no schedule. Although that sounds great, it’s actually terrifying. That’s why so many of us are doing whatever we can to get into the workforce. Wouldn’t you want an employee who actually can’t wait to come into work each day and excel in their position? We are eager to continue learning because we know our education did not end with college. Also learning is what we’ve been doing our whole lives; we are still in that mode.
Bottom line, consider Class of 2023 graduates, or any recent graduate for your position. Even if we don’t have 3-5 years of experience (which isn’t entry-level, but that’s a whole other conversation), we have all of these qualities that if you take the tiniest bit of time to teach and train, we will impress you greatly. We are ready to start our careers.
